Degrees
| Degree | Note | Interval | Semitones | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | C | perfect unison | 0 | The root — the tonal centre every other note is heard against; land on it and the sound resolves. |
| ♭3 | E♭ | minor third | 3 | The minor third — the dark counterpart of the major third; it turns a shape minor and colours m, m7 and the minor scales. |
| 5 | G | perfect fifth | 7 | The perfect fifth — the root's strongest companion; it anchors every triad and stacked-seventh quality. |
| ♭7 | B♭ | minor seventh | 10 | The minor seventh — the dominant's engine; a whole step under the root, it turns a triad into a 7 chord and drives the resolution. |
| 9 | D | major ninth | 14 | The major ninth — the second degree an octave up; it adds shimmer to maj9, 6/9 and the m9 family without changing the harmony. |
| 11 | F | perfect eleventh | 17 | The perfect eleventh — the fourth an octave up; m11 and the dominant 11 keep it as a soft, open suspension. |
About this arpeggio
The minor eleventh chord is the open, airy side of minor harmony: a minor seventh with a ninth and an eleventh stacked above it. The eleventh is the fourth degree an octave up, and against the minor third it sounds suspended and unresolved, which is exactly why this quality works over long static vamps instead of functional cadences. It is the natural chord of the dorian scale, and jazz players use it when a minor chord needs to breathe rather than declare. The shape spreads wide across the neck, so it rewards slow, connected arpeggio practice. Listen for the fourth floating over the minor third without ever collapsing into a resolution.
How to practise this arpeggio
- Play the eleventh and hold it against the minor third to hear the suspension.
- Loop the arpeggio over a static minor vamp and let the fourth breathe.
- Compare it with m9 and hear how the eleventh opens the chord further.
- Play the upper four notes as a chord and listen to the quartal stack.
